❤ Steps to Mindfulness

Sunday, 4 May 2014 / No Comments

Mindfulness is the quality or state of being conscious or aware of something. Jon Kabat-Zinn’s definition of mindfulness is; “Mindfulness means paying attention in a particular way; On purpose, in the present moment, and nonjudgmentally.”

Wouldn't it be nice to get out and stretch your legs?  By practising mindfulness you can experience, even if only temporarily, a release from the anxiety and stress of life. The proven benefits of mindfulness are:

Stress Reduction
Focus
More satisfaction in relationships
Enhances self-insight, morality, intuition and decreases fear
Boosts memory
Less emotional reactions

So let's take a look at how we can attempt to achieve mindfulness.

1.  Mindful Breathing

It is said that if you want to save yourself thousands in psychologist fees, simply learn how to breathe mindfully. The breath is a good place to start; because we are breathing all the time, although usually unconsciously, by tuning in we can unify our mind and body and become tied to the present moment.

You can literally feel tension and stress floating away. Feel the breath coming into your body through the tips of your nostrils and then leaving your body again. Try envisioning your breath as a circle.

Visualize the inhales filling up half the circle then flowing directly into the exhales. It is a continuous motion. Whenever you notice your mind has wandered, bring it back to the breath.

If you want to take it one step further, on your inhales envision white healing light entering your body and on your exhale envision anxiety and tension leaving your body. Leave reminders for yourself throughout the day to breathe.

2.  Awareness of Your Bodily Sensations

So often we live in our heads  and we completely forget about our body, unless of course we are in distress. We think that our mind is completely separate from our physical body.

To become aware of your body send your breath to different parts and acknowledge those body parts. Notice the tingling in your fingers, release the stress in your stomach, become aware of the top of your head and the tension in your neck. By becoming aware of your body this will bring you into the present moment. It will fine tune your senses and quiet the mind.

A good place to practice tuning into your body is in the shower. Pay attention to the feeling of the water rolling over each part of your body, the sensations and the temperature; bring yourself into complete physical awareness.

3.  Concentration on your Mindfulness

Concentration is really the foundation of a mindfulness practice; after all you can only practice to the extent that your mind is calm. Without concentration your mind will be like a choppy sea in a storm.

Think of concentration like unwavering attention on one thing. It is the amount of time that we can stay focused before we notice our mind has wandered. Do one thing at a time, slowly and deliberately, bring purpose into your actions, become aware of your thoughts, actions and especially your breath.

If you are checking your email, just check your email; don’t bounce into Facebook at the same time. If you are eating dinner, just eat dinner, don’t check your phone and watch the news too.

Every time you notice your concentration has wandered, bring yourself back to the breath. This won’t happen overnight but with practice you will gain focus, the deeper your concentration the deeper you can enter into mindfulness and its intoxicating benefits.

4.  Walking Meditation

Mindful walking can bridge the gap between the everyday motions and tasks and the beauty of present moment awareness. Whether it’s getting up from your desk and shimmying to the photocopier or going for an hour walk with your dog, pay attention to the ground underneath your feet, the shifting of your weight, your pace, thoughts, maybe the cool breeze or the stale office air.

Try to slow down, center yourself in the present moment and walk with confidence. We can enter into a walking meditation whenever we choose.

You can also practice walking meditation just by walking without intention of going anywhere. Just back and forth. Remind yourself to be in the moment taking each step as it comes, accepting each moment and paying attention.  You are here right now and you will get there.

5.  Eating Meditation

So often we eat on autopilot, usually unaware that we are even eating at all.

But eating is directly tied to how we feel; therefore it is so important to tune in. Mindful eating will in fact develop a love of natural foods and an ability to recognize your body’s nourishment needs.

It will help control emotional eating and bring you into the present moment.  Practice eating slowly and deliberately. Turn off all media and eat in silence; chew each bite, thoughtfully and carefully.  Eat slowly, silently, mindfully.

Start practicing mindful eating with a piece of fruit for just ten minutes a day.

6. Realize That You Are Not Your Thoughts and Emotions

A key to mindfulness is the understanding that your mind is experiencing many thoughts; we usually aren’t even aware that it’s happening. When you understand that your mind chatters away you can gain control to not let every thought disrupt your inner peace. This is where big benefits start happening.

You are NOT your feelings and you are NOT your thoughts.

When you say I am upset, do you really mean that you are the emotion? If we are our feelings or thoughts when they disappear, we should technically disappear too.  But we don’t.  Thoughts, feelings emotions fade away and we can also stop them from progressing by changing our thoughts.

Your feelings are like a weather system passing through, they will blow by.  They are not you.

 7.  Get the proper rest

We need sleep to recharge our brains and bodies. When we are tired, we can aimlessly jump from task to task without any real clarity. We end up treading a tiring circle of never-ending tasks.

Its a interconnected circle, the old chicken or the egg philosophizing. We need mindfulness to sleep and we need sleep to practice mindfulness.

Bad sleep habits cause our bodies to become worn. Like an engine without an oil change, we start to break down. For some tips on Sleep, see 10 Sleep Habits of Successful People.

8.  Meditation

Meditation will open a whole new world.

You need to turn off your mind. Our mind does a lot of thinking, and we usually aren't even aware that it’s happening. But these thoughts are powerful, and sometimes thoughts can spiral into stressful, negative thoughts and control us.

Meditation will give you powerful tools to be the watcher of your mind. By watching your mind, you can prevent urges and negative thoughts, and you can lead a stress-less life.

Start with just 2 minutes per day, sit either in traditional meditation or simply sit in silence and pay attention to your breath.

9.  Patience

Our mind is usually very impatient and restless, when we begin a mindfulness practice we are naturally developing patience every time we stop and practice.

Remember that everything comes in its own time like cooking an egg, if you try to rush it, the yolk will break and make a big mess. Try looking at your own patience when anger arises.

Know that mindfulness is a practice that can take years to master and when you first begin and you find that your mind is bouncing from thought to thought, don’t be too hard on yourself. Develop the patience to know that it will come in time, becoming impatient with an mindfulness meditation practice is only going to slow down your advancement

10. Interconnectedness

Everything is connected to everything else. Without sunlight there is no life, without water there is no life, without trees there is no oxygen; it is a complex web of finely balanced interconnections.

It can be very dangerous to think that we exist separate from everything else; we can see the destructive effects of this thinking on our environment and in the animal kingdom, discover the thread of interconnectedness.

Everything is impermanent and in a constant state of change, this can help us appreciate our relationships, circumstances and things.  We will likely appreciate life more because everything we come into contact with connects us to the whole world each moment and it’s only for a temporary moment.  It’s very interesting everything has a larger fullness and a mindfulness practice is the ongoing discovery of that thread of interconnectedness.

Everyone of these steps needs to be infused with gratitude; be thankful that you can breath, eat, walk, concentrate, meditate and contemplate.

It is mindfulness that will help you reconnect with yourself and become healthier in mind, body and spirit, now and in the future, and it all starts by changing one habit at a time.

❤ Balancing your chakras with affirmations

Friday, 2 May 2014 / No Comments

In Hindu and yogic traditions and other belief systems chakras are energy points connected to your physical body. Each one relates to different organs of your body, and different aspects of your being. When they are open and flowing, everything works in harmony. When they are closed you feel unwell, you may have disease or illness. The term chakra comes from Sanskrit – the ancient, sacred language of India – and means “spinning wheel”. It refers to the ever turning energy centers that are a part of your subtle or energetic body. Yogis and clairvoyant seers (people who can see energy and auras) describe chakras as spinning fans, lotus flowers, or suns of light stacked along the body.

One of the easiest ways to tell if your chakras are closed is to ask yourself how you feel. Are you experiencing fatigue? What about illness or depression? Each of the seven major chakras also corresponds to specific areas of the body.  Take a self-inventory and listen to your body. If you discover that your chakras are closed, don’t worry. You can get them open and functioning properly once more. To open or balance a closed chakra we can simply repeat affirmations that correspond with the chakra in question. Our thoughts are very important to our well-being and if we train ourselves to think positive thoughts we can bring about an amazing change in how we feel.

I've listed affirmations for each of the 7 chakras. Find a quiet, peaceful spot to do some meditation exercises and repeat the affirmations. Do this for 10 to 15 minutes daily for about a week. Next time you check your chakra again, you should notice an improvement.

1. Root Chakra – The root chakra is located at the base of our spine and corresponds to the color red. This chakra relates to our basic human instinct for survival, security and stability and the connection to the earth.
Affirmation: "I trust in the process of life and I am peaceful, protected and secure”

2. Sacral Chakra – The sacral chakra is located just below our navel in our lower abdominal region. The color of this chakra is a deep, orange and relates to reproduction on a physical level, creativity, sexuality, pleasure, joy and relationships on an emotional level and our energy and passions on a spiritual level.
Affirmation: “I am radiant, beautiful and strong, I am surrounded by relationships that feel good"

3. Solar Plexus Chakra – This chakra is located above our navel and directly in our stomach area. The solar plexus chakra therefore plays a vital role in digestion and glows in a bright yellow color. This chakra deals with growth and pertains to issues of the intellect, personal power, control and spiritual evolution.

Affirmation: “I am a powerful creator of my life and I easily manifest my desires"
4. Heart Chakra – The heart chakra is located in the center of the chest and spins with a vibrant green color. This chakra is one of the most important meditation tools for cleansing and clearing spiritual imbalances. The key issues related to the heart chakra are unconditional love, compassion and wellbeing.
Affirmation: “Love is the answer to everything in life; I completely love and accept myself”
5. Throat Chakra – This chakra is centered in our throat and exudes a pale blue light. The throat chakra governs our ability to express and communicate clear thoughts and ideas. It is also related to truth, maturity, independence and the ability to trust others.

Affirmation: “My thoughts are positive, and I always speak my truth with confidence”
6. Third Eye Chakra – The third eye chakra is positioned in the center of our forehead, between our eyebrows. Also known as the brow chakra, it spins in a deep saturated dark blue hue and helps us tap into our inner guidance and divine vision. This chakra deals with developing intuitive clarity, releasing repressed emotions and attaining self-realization.

Affirmation: “I am tuned into the divine universal wisdom and I trust my intuition”
7. Crown Chakra – The crown chakra is located at the top of our head or in the crown area and corresponds to the violet color. The role of this chakra is based in awakening consciousness and attaining enlightenment through the integration of the self into the one universal form of intelligence.

Affirmation: “I am sure of my inner knowing and I am pure light and love”
There can be nothing more effective and transformative than using your very own power of thought to bring positive changes to your life.

❤ Tulsi Natural Toothpaste

I just whipped up some toothpaste using bentonite clay, Tulsi, grapefruit seed extract, myrhh extract, baking soda, living water, probiotics, himalayan pink sea salt, coconut oil and fennel essential oil blend. Yummy! Why natural toothpaste? Most commercial brands contain Fluoride, a toxic chemical that has not actually been shown to reduce tooth decay, and certainly not at the rate that a diet low in phytic acid can. Fluoride also has been linked to thyroid damage and hosts of other problems.

Like most commercial health and beauty products on the market, toothpaste has been industrialized over the years. Here are just a few of the questionable ingredients commonly found in commercial toothpastes: The Case Against Fluoride: How Hazardous Waste Ended Up in Our Drinking Water and the Bad Science and Powerful Politics That Keep It ThereFluoride. While fluoride is supposedly the ingredient that prevents cavities, it doesn't do that job very well and can actually be very toxic to the body. In fact, if you suffer from acne outbreaks around the mouth and chin area, fluoride toothpaste may be the cause! (If you haven’t already, check out The Case Against Fluorideand The Fluoride Deception for more information.) Fluoride-free toothpastes are becoming more common, but unfortunately it’s not the only ingredient in toothpaste you should be avoiding. Titanium dioxide. There are some concerns that titanium dioxide is carcinogenic. The biggest problem is that nano-sized particles of titanium dioxide can be absorbed through the mouth and may cause toxic damage in the cells of the body. Glycerin. (man made). This is found in almost every toothpaste on the market (even the natural ones).

Glycerin helps give toothpaste its pasty texture and keeps it from drying out. But it can also leave a coating on your teeth that prevents them from remineralizing. Sodium lauryl sulfate. It gives you the foamy cleaning action we all expect from toothpaste, but sodium lauryl sulfate is also a strong chemical surfactant that doesn’t belong in our bodies. Artificial sweeteners. I don’t know about you, but I generally avoid chemical sweeteners like sorbitol and saccharin. Unfortunately, these are commonly used in commercial toothpaste to make them taste sweet.

❤ Path To Success

As a woman on the path to success we expect to feel a sense of achievement when we see that we have reached the top, where we wanted to be. How does it look from there? Will the world and people around you look beautiful? Will the journey to the top be pleasant and memorable? For so many women whom I have met this journey has certainly not been easy. It is not always a journey of mutual support, upliftment and friendliness. Instead, you have to be careful about who is conspiring to push you down. There are many challenges, not just due to gender bias, but also due to an unhealthy competition and jealousy from other women themselves! This kind of journey can be very stressful and takes its toll on our body and mind.

If you correct your mind, the rest of your life will fall into place.” ~Lao Tzu

In this world where everyone’s lives are open for all to see through social networks, it’s easy to constantly compare yourself with your peers and competitors. While healthy competition is a good sign, blatant jealousy isn’t. For me, I focus on being my own competition. I compare my own past and try to get better every single day. It help's me become the best ME I can be without falling prey to petty jealousy.

My guru says; one who manages all challenges that life gives is successful.

However, what are the skills that we need to be able to do this and succeed? Read on and see if you agree with me. Every year I do an exercise where I write out my perfect day. The other day, I looked back at what my ‘perfect day’ was 5 years ago. It was almost the exact opposite of what my vision of success is today.

Back then I wanted ease. I wanted no alarm clock, little work, and a life of luxury. What I've come to understand is that in creating the ability to have that life of luxury, I’ll have to go through my fair share of failures and struggles. Those failures and struggles are where I’ll develop into the woman I want to be, a success, and a better human being. Why, then, would I want to forgo that growth? Why, even if I'm able, would I reach my idea of success, and then simply stop my evolution by lulling in to a life of ease or a life of focusing on other people's short comings, or on conspiring to push other's down ?

Just because success is attained doesn't mean our growth as people, entrepreneurs, or leaders, comes to a halt. Look at Teddy Roosevelt. He never stopped achieving, accomplishing, and growing as an individual until the day he died. The same with Andrew Carnegie, and any other person in history who accomplished anything of great value.

So what do I do when I have to face one of life's challenges? Other than taking it to the mat, I go through my list of pointers I have for managing my life's challenges.

Commitment – One failure can lead to another success later.
Time – It is not sufficient to invest money to nurture or develop anything unless I give it my time.
Setting an Example – A successful woman doesn’t just show you the way; She walks the talk.
Team work – inspire participation and contribution.
Silence – Nurture quietude and calmness.
Reflection – Sit quietly at the end of the day, looking back at all the day’s activities, seeing where, if and how I made a difference. Reminding myself of the successes, as it can inspire me to do more.

So as I continue my life's' journey, I continue to celebrate my own achievements, however small they may be. I know Rome wasn't built in a day so I can't expect to build my success in a day.  So I continue to be passionate about my life. I continue to love myself and respect my own life because I believe in my own capabilities. I understand there is a whole world of opportunities out there so I don't need to play petty girl games with anyone.

What you can do; start focusing on your lines, your brand, and living with integrity in your own life. Don't look to me as a yardstick for comparison, but as an instrument for inspiration – you might be surprised to find you have the same qualities within yourself.
